Introduction to My Wheelchair Series

This is an opportunity for me to begin my website’s wheelchair review series. I have been fortunate to use power wheelchairs for an extraordinarily long time. Starting as a small child in 1971, the thrill of moving around was beyond compare — before that time, my mobility was quite limited. If I wanted to go very far, I was unable to push a manual wheelchair. That was when I was introduced to the new world of power, and it gave me a true sense of liberation.

The reviews that follow will cover all the wheelchairs I’ve owned that I can readily remember, as well as my current wheelchair. There has been a remarkable transition in wheelchair design since the early 1970s, through the 1980s and 1990s, and into the 2000s. Some of this evolution will be chronicled in the articles that follow this page.

My aim in publishing these reflections is simple: to help people. Whether you’re exploring options for yourself, supporting someone else, or just curious about how wheelchair technology has changed over time, I hope my experiences can offer insight, reassurance, and maybe even inspiration.
